Albemarle Ballet Theatre and the Studio for the Performing Arts present their 8th Spring Dance Gala at PVCC's Dickinson Theatre on Saturday, May 19th at 6pm. With a unique happy ending, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" is set to a mix of ballet, contemporary, jazz, and modern dance. A prelude will be by performed by guest artists Nicky Coelho and Veronica Hart. Proceeds from this 1½-hour production, underwritten by Charlottesville Self Storage at Crozet and Monticello Media, will go to SFTPA's local need-based scholarship program.
"The Pied Piper of Hamelin" meets "West Side Story" in this contemporary ballet and jazz dance production for children of all ages. Cool rats in black derbies and jackets with tails "and tails," invade Hamelin with mischievous antics. The townspeople dressed in period costumes sic their Broadway styled cats on the rowdy rambunctious rodents in a climactic scene performed to the "Mambo" from West Side Story.
After the cats fail to eradicate the rats, the town's Mayor hires our hero. The Pied Piper leads the rats to their demise in a parade set to New Orleans jazz. When the mayor tries to swindle him out of his pay, well, you'll just have to come on out with your family and friends to find out how the Pied Piper becomes the hero of Hamelin.
Nicky Coelho of James Sewell Ballet will present a new contemporary solo set to American Rag time. Veronica Hart of Charlottesville Ballet and ConcorDance Contemporary will debut a new piece. "Surprise" is the only description these two phenomenal guest artists have offered for their new works. Based on their crowd pleasing past creations, I guarantee you will be electrifyingly entertained.
This 8th annual family show is produced and directed by Sally Hart with choreography by renowned Audrey Fenske, Ashley Geisler, Dinah Gray, Veronica Hart, and Moria Price.
